Welcome to the first post on ketoistheworst.com. By now I’m pretty sure by now you’ve realized that I don’t mean that. I believe keto can be extremely effective and can be easy to stick to when done properly.
But that’s the problem, it’s not always done properly. There’s a lot of misinformation and judgement out there about the diet and the people who are on it. Which leads people down the wrong path.
Now in future posts I’ll explain what a ketogenic diet is, why is it beneficial, what are the foods you can and cannot have and all that.
But I want to do something a little differently with this first post. Since no one will ever read this, I’m going to take a moment to talk into the abyss that is page 27 of google. (that’s probably being very generous).
This is going to be about why I’m doing this. What is it I want to accomplish? What is my vision for this?
So, why ketoistheworst.com
Mainly because mostlyketo.com would have cost me $500. More on that in a couple of weeks.
In short, this site is for you. It’s not about me or my goals. Not about how much I’ve lost or my story. That’s not interesting to me.
I hear myself talk all the time.
I want to hear your story, what are your goals, what has stopped you in the past and what struggles are you facing now. Why are you looking into keto, why are you on this site?
But first…
Unfortunately, we do have to talk a little about me.
For the past 10 years I’ve struggled with my weight. Going from mid-180 to 250 and back down 198. Only to gain it back and then some to 257, to lose it all again and get down to as of this writing, 184.
I covered those ups and downs in two sentences, but the journey was way more difficult than that. If you want to read more about the full story you can see the about me page. For now, I’m just going for a little bit of context.
Now one of the biggest things I get when people see my before and after, as well the before and after that, is either “I wish I could lose weight as easily as you” or “I wish I could be as disciplined as you.”
Both of which are wrong, the former is condescending, and the latter is misinformed. Yes, it is simple, but it’s not at all easy. And in all honesty, I wish I were disciplined too.
I have failed so many times, have stalled out and hit plateaus that seemed like they would never end. Tried a whole bunch of programs and diets that I could not stick to for more than 2 weeks at a time.
The first time I lost 50 pounds, I was just throwing things at the wall trying to see what stuck. I’ve tried bro science diets with 5 shots of chicken and broccoli with a protein shake chaser. I went vegan for a while. Tried low-fat diets, green smoothie breakfasts.
They all worked a little. 5-10 pounds with chicken and broccoli (that gets boring real fast), 20 pounds with vegan (better than the former but could not keep it up long term).
Over the course of 3 years I was able to lose the weight. I would say a large part of that was due to weight training. Building muscle and just not screwing it all up in the kitchen.
I just kept at it over a grueling period of time. The amount of times I went without alcohol, or meat & dairy, or food with flavor. Looking at the food the people around me had ordered while mine always looked suspiciously grey.
My point is I didn’t do anything special. Queue the cliché…
“if I could do it, you could too”
What I hope you don’t do that I did, is gain it all back.
Don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t that I did some crazy crash diet, reached my goal, and went right back to my old ways.
Sometimes life gets complicated. I was in the thesis year of my architecture degree, working two part time jobs. I went from working out 6 days a week and sleeping 7 hours a night to 1-2 days a week and 3-4 hours a night.
So, what to do when you find yourself at the bottom of the mountain once again… you start rolling that boulder back up the mountain. What else are you going to do.
Like I said before, I didn’t do anything special. I just did it all again, all the things that kind of worked the first time. Only to find that it didn’t work anymore. Or at least didn’t work for me.
3 months in, no pounds down.
It was time to try something new.
Enter intermittent fasting.
2 weeks later, Keto.
3 weeks after that, 20 pounds lost.
Now a whole baby later (9 months), I’ve passed 75 pounds. (Can you imagine a 75 pound baby…)
That’s what keto has done for me, and that’s what I think keto can do for you. It can help you reach your health and fitness goals, whatever they may be. It can help you get control over your connection to food.
And I want to help.
At the end of the day, it’s not about discipline, or motivation, or working out till you pass out. It’s about consistency. Finding what works for you and expanding on that.
I love talking about this lifestyle (only when asked though, don’t be one of those people who won’t shut up… they might actually be the worst). From reading the books, watching the videos, trying the recipes, I’ve found something I’m passionate about and can’t get enough of.
It only took 28 years.
And now I want to share it.
I’ve done the work and will continue to do so with or with out this site. But that’s no fun. I want to bring as many people along for the ride as I can.
Next week I will be posting what my keto philosophy is. Which is my way of saying that I’m going to tell you what keto is without all the scientific terms and math. It’ll what my day looks like, my week, my cheats. And get into some of the stuff I think will help you get started or help keep you going.
For now, to finish off this post, I’m going to talk about the structure and what you can expect from this website.
The hardest thing about keto is the transition. Those first 3 weeks. Which is unfortunate because that’s where most people new to this quit.
But with the right recipes, you can kick any craving. As you get further along this journey, everywhere you look you’ll be seeing how to turn this or that low carb. Instead of seeing everything as carb.
To get you there, every Monday I’ll be putting up tips and information. Either it be what foods to eat or avoid. What that first grocery haul should look like. What snacks can help you when you’re missing that special someone…. I mean something, sorry.
And of course, whatever else you want to know.
Next, Wednesdays expect a new recipe. As you’ll see, I don’t subscribe to the notion that keto is ultra-high fat. I eat a good amount of protein and a lot of vegetables. More than when I went vegan for 6 weeks.
Now fair warning, I didn’t start cooking for real less until than a year ago. I’m still learning.
Experimenting would be more appropriate.
In general these recipes will fall under two categories. Staples that have made their way into my rotation, and things that I’m still working on. The idea is there just not the execution.
And that’s where you come in. To tell me what you would have done differently and how to make it work.
Finally, Friday will be about meal prep and planning. In my opinion, this is by far the most important thing when it comes to weight loss and nutrition.
Having a plan. Being able incorporate the food you like, scheduling your cheats, never having the same thing too many times.
I have a lot of strategies that if you can spare a couple hours at the beginning of the week, the rest of the week will be a breeze.
Well that’s all I have for you. This Wednesday I will have a Salmon/Crab Cake recipe up.
On the .001% chance someone has found this post and has read this far, I just want to thank you for taking the time.
I hope you keep reading and join me on this lifestyle. Let’s show everyone ketoistheworst.
